Cogeneration is a technology to produce heat and power (electricity) simultaneously. In this respect it is not very special since every technology that produces power also produces heat. What makes cogeneration special is the fact that both the produced power and heat find usefull application. Cogeneration is used already a long time in industries with high heat demand (e.g. paper and chemical industry). New developments make it possible that the units become smaller and smaller. At this moment even cogeneration units that produce electricity and heat for indivudual houses are coming to a stage of commercial application. Economical application of cogeneration is not always easy. The EU commission sees cogeneration however as an important way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and stimulates the use of it via different directives that have to be implemented by the member states in the coming years.
